The bulk tank has the longest contact time with milk. Therefore, the tank must be well-managed and thoroughly cleaned.
Bulk Tank Management
- Milk should be cooled within 30 minutes of milking to 4°C or less
- Adequate agitation during storage is required
Bulk Tank Cleaning
The bulk tank is washed hot after every collection. Therefore, the milk collection day determines the tank’s Cleaning Routine.
A milk collection every second day would drive the following routine.
Days | Washes |
---|---|
Monday | Hot Detergent Wash |
Wednesday | Hot Descale Wash |
Friday | Hot Detergent Wash |
Sunday | Hot Descale Wash |
“ An acid descale wash is advised every 2nd wash when a Chlorine Free wash routine is in place. This provides a robust clean for the bulk tank, de-stabilising bacteria using the ph alternation as part of the cleaning process.

The typical volume of water required to wash a tank is calculated at:
1% of tank capacity = water requirement to wash.
Example: 10,000 litre tank capacity = 100 litres of water requirement.
